about

Meşkhane is a group of four musicians who share a common love for and interest in Turkish and oriental music. They met on a beautiful island in the Bosphorus and found that their music matched instantly. They had the same interest for Turkish and oriental music which is music they continue to learn. Between the variety of popular rhythms, the rigor of Ottoman classical music and the mysteries of makams, their playing flows through many different moods. It latches on to themes, expressing and following sections of the music in interesting ways. This style of music is never totally fixed. It is always alive.

Their repertoir consists mostly of classical Turkish pieces and gypsy dancing tunes using saxophone, kanun, oud, darbuka and other percussion. They are all in the oriental modes, similar to the western scales, called "makam". In general terms makam is a set of scales(tetrachord/pentachord), called çeşni (flavours), combined with the seyir, which is the behavior of melodic development (ascending or descending). The main difference between western and makam music is that the makams are entirely melodic, excluding harmony and chords. The only inportance is the interval between the notes not the pitch itself.

The majority of the pieces were written in Ottoman time, mostly by old masters (usta) and performed on traditional instruments like oud, kanun, ney, tanbur, kemenche (lira).
